The character screen still shows "social class", even though it has no effect on starting gold and thus is unused in the game. Perhaps it could be removed - or even better, it could be redone so that instead of determining other stats, it is determined by them and just adds flavor, much like the "height" and "weight" stats.
Here's a system I propose to redo social class:
- Race is the primary determinant of social class; races such as elves and dunedain would have high social class, while races such as trolls and half-orcs would be low, with races such as humans and hobbits in the middle.
- Stat/gold choice is the secondary determinant; the more points you leave for gold and don't spend on stats, the higher your social class, but a troll with 4900 gold would still be lower class than a high-elf with maxed-out stats!
- Charisma is the tertiary determinant; it provides a small boost to social class.
- Instead of displaying social class as a boring old number, display it as a word or phrase similarly to the miscellaneous skills such as Fighting and Saving Throw. I'm not sure what to call the various gradations, but perhaps they could range from "Outcast" to "Average Joe" to "Lordly".
